Under present New Jersey law, completion of a certified course of instruction in defensive driving results in a two point reduction in the drivers MVS abstract and can significantly reduce the amount he or she pays for their private passenger automobile insurance coverage. See N.J.S.A. 17:33B-45.
New Jersey drivers attending a one-day defensive driving class
Receive a two (2) point reduction on their MVS abstract. In addition, under Department of Insurance Bulletin No. 96-07, anyone who presents a Course Completion Certificate to their auto insurance carrier upon renewal of their policy is eligible for a minimum five percent (5%) premium discount on the base rate for bodily injury, property damage, personal injury protection and collision coverage for the vehicle principally operated by the person who has successfully completed the course.
The insurance discount lasts for three (3) years provided the person has not accumulated four or more additional points after completion of the course and has not had his/her license suspended for any reason.
Both the American Automobile Association and C3I Technologies are an authorized Defensive Driving Instructor, sanctioned by the National Safety Council, offering a one day course which is certified by New Jersey Motor Vehicle Services, pursuant to N.J.S.A. 17:33b-45 and N.J.A.C. 13:21-24.
This class enables you to save on your insurance and take two points off your driving record.
Drivers with two or more points on their MVS abstract will be eligible for the point reduction.
Points are deducted within 30 days of completion of the course.
Even if there are no points on your license, you can take the course to get a discount on your automobile insurance.
Point and Discount Information
Drivers may apply for the DMV point Reduction once every five (5) years. Insurance discounts are available for three (3) years. Drivers may not reduce their DMV point total below zero.
This course is separate from the NJDMV course for violators who have accumulated 12 or more points.
Drivers may take BOTH courses, resulting in a total point reduction of four (4) points.
